Futurama was always close to Matt Groening’s heart. The show held on for four seasons, but when it was cancelled, the cartoonist was thrilled to see fans demand its return. Now the first DVD movie is coming out and it’s like they never left.

Matt Groening on Futurama and Bender's Big Score

“I work with David Cohen on Futurama from the very beginning,” said Groening. “We never really quit. We would always throw around story ideas the entire time. We would go to the San Diego Comic Con every year and the cult of rabid fans never went away. We kept on promising we'd come back and finally we did. Finally, we're not lying anymore.”

Bender’s Big Score features naked aliens called the Nudars and more exposure of characters like Fry. “Keep your eyes peeled for alien crazy nudity. Again, aliens are not constructed anatomically the way humans are so you don't necessarily want to look in the place where you think you should look. It could be someplace more obvious or less obvious.”

Even the title character gets in on the nudity. “The only time Bender is not naked is when he gets out of a bath and he wears a towel. It's most peculiar.”

With four new Futurama movies and the massive success of The Simpsons Movie, Groening is riding high. “I'm going to quit. I've had too much. I'm going to slow down. I'm going to get a job at Kwik-E-Mart and sell Duff beer. No, this is fun. This is great. This is a cartoonist's dream. You know, the reason why people go into cartooning is not to speak into microphones at fancy Hollywood premieres, but because we're in the back of class bitter or resigned to being failures or drawing pictures of other people. Then somehow, sometimes, occasionally, rarely it pays off.”

If Groening had looked into the future, he never would have predicted this success. “I knew this much. I knew that I would be drawing cartoons for the rest of my life, but I didn’t think I'd be doing it and getting paid for it. I thought I'd be doing some other thing, whatever, selling shoes, selling newspapers, whatever and I'd be drawing on the side. The fact that I get to do this now is great.”
