Confirmed: Karl Urban is Bones!
I hate driving a point into the ground, but the casting around Star Trek seems to follow a formula. First we are told that a certain individual is at the top of some list for 'the' part. Then we are told the certain individual has been made an offer. While waiting for some official confirmation we are then told that the same individual is moving his production schedules around to make room for said role.
And then, finally, we get a confirmation!
Karl Urban is Bones
It has been confirmed today that Karl Urban has in fact closed a deal to play Leonard "Bones" McCoy in Star Trek. Chris Pine, who has been in orbit around the part for James T. Kirk, has closed his deal as well. As I mentioned last week, Abrams was forced to go on a casting frenzy with the production date closing in. In the last week we have seen Urban, Pine, John Cho, Simon Pegg and Eric Bana all join the cast.
While we have a cast, the plot details are still being kept on lockdown. What we do (kinda) know is that the film will take place during the Academy or early days of the Enterprise crew.
The character of McCoy, originated by DeForest Kelley, didn't trust advanced technology and frequently sparred with Spock in debates of logic vs. emotion. Bones also was responsible for several of "Trek's" catchphases, including "He's dead, Jim" and "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a ...," ending in a profession in which he had no training.
If you remember the first Star Trek movie, somebody gets beamed aboard with their ass attached to their head. Horrific!
Karl Urban can be seen with flowing blonde hair in the last two Lord of the Rings installments or with a sci fi mullet in The Chronicles of Riddick.
