Dirty Sexy Money
Peter Krause returns to television in ABC's new drama, Dirty Sexy Money. He plays Nick George, a lawyer for the billionaire Darling family, trying to keep them out of trouble every week. The sort of peacekeeper role falling into the family business resembles that of Nate Fisher a tad, but Krause doesn't try to fight it.
Krause Keeps Peace on Dirty Sexy Money
"The first thing that comes to mind is I was just recently reading East of Eden and I shared a quote from within it, comes from Marcus Aurelius," said Krause. "It talks about how there's nothing that the universe likes to do more than to destroy something and out of it create something new like what came before. So I'm going to walk the walk that my father walked. I'm taking a dare, if you will, as Nick George. I'm being dared to walk in my father's shoes and I think out of pride, out of ego, I even say it to Lisa that I'm not my father, and I'm going to do it my way. That begs the question, 'Can you?' We're all thrust into that. That's just the nature of human life. We are things like our parents and we're just the next thing. We can say we're not our father, we're not our mother and we're not going to be like them. We're not going to do what they do. The world looks an awful lot like it did when I was a kid and I thought everything was going to change."
George becomes entwined with the Darlings early on, as he has been in his backstory. The very first episode suggests a potential affair with Karen Darling, representing the Sexy part of the title. "I think in the pilot, it shows me receiving a kiss from Karen Darling played by Natalie Zea. We've had a relationship when we were younger, teenage sweethearts. So there's also that operating for Nick. That's also drawing him perhaps back into the family or not."
The issues the Darlings face will be much grander than those of the Fishers, because everything is operating on a scale of $32 billion. "Actually I want to talk numbers a little bit because numbers in this world are pretty interesting to me. Tripp Darling has offered me $10 million a year to give away charitably which is really wonderful, on top of my salary. Now that's a big number, $10 million. But the Darling family being worth over $30 billion, that's 30,000 million just to put it in perspective. You can spend $300 million a year for a hundred years and still have $2 billion left over if it's at $32 billion. Seth Gabel, who plays Jeremy Darling, might be going to Space Camp and eventually perhaps going to the International Space Station. Just recently it was in the news that the price was going to go from [$25 million to $40 million]. So if you want to go to the space station, want to save a few million dollars, you have to go now. The price is up to $40 million just in terms of perspective in the world and these figures that we're dealing with. It is something that I think is an incredible window into a world that does exist out there. There are people who have that kind of money and who want to take trips to the space station."
But the wealthy are people too. "They are incredibly wealthy. As written, they are worth in excess of $30 billion. So these aren't millionaires. These are people who wake up in the morning and have no question about money. It's just not a part of their lives, but it doesn't mean that they are not wondering whether or not this is going to be a day that brings them happiness or sorrow. It's a fair exploration of the privileged world."
