Thomas Decker: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Poor Edward Furlong missed the chance to play John Connor again in Terminator 3. Now he's too old to play the latest incarnation of his character. TV's The Sarah Connor Chronicles cast Thomas Dekker as the teenage John, but Furlong should feel safe that his legacy is in good hands.
Thomas Decker is John Connor
"As far as I'm concerned, I grew up watching both films and really knew John very, very well," said Dekker. "I think I first discovered it when I was about 11 or 12 and he was always kind of a hero to me, kind of an icon obviously. So I tried to keep the character that I knew from the films, sort of lionhearted, wild, kind of doesn't think before he speaks but he's in a very different place in our show than he is in the films. He's hiding, he has his head down, he's scared, he's aware of his fate. So I'm trying to keep the essence of John while still reinventing it at the same time. It just made sense in the take of our show."
Fans should also be satisfied with the level of action on the show. "I've done films and television, big films and big television. I've never experienced anything like this. The action scenes were insane. The very first day of shooting it was ridiculous. It was like a two day shoot, flat out, shooting with six cameras at once, one super 16. We got so much coverage. We don't want this to be a watered down 'it's TV, let's bang it out.' And even in the series, it's one thing to do that for the pilot, but in the series we're going to continue that as well. That's partly what's revolutionary about this show."
Even so, Dekker has already seen criticism from Terminator fans. "We've had a lot of negative response online because obviously I think when you're dealing with anything that's beloved, I think people would just rather it not be made at all if it's not made with all the same cast. However, a lot of people who have seen it, the response has been really positive. We just did an autograph signing and the response was really, really great. I got told that they liked my John Connor which is scary. It makes me nervous. I hope I'm doing it well. We really like the show so we hope the fans will feel the same way."
If not, at least he got to hang out with Lena Headey for a while. "I can honestly say my entire career I have not ever really liked or bonded much with my other actors. It just never happened. I don't know why. But for some reason, she's my favorite person I've ever worked with. No bullsh*t. I honestly am thankful every day. It's the truth though. It's good, I'm very grateful."
The Sarah Connor Chronicles premieres in January on Fox.
