I am currently awaiting the release of Xbox 360 Elite so I can then go out and immediately buy Guitar Hero II. I will also transfer the HD DVD player over so I can enjoy high-definition goodness without being limited to the still-few HD channels offered on cable.
Fortunately for Xbox 360's Live Marketplace, television and film is available for download and, better yet, it comes in HD - hence the upgraded 120 GB hard drive on the Elite. Though most venues enjoy cable or DVD release before they jump into broadband HD, Comedy Central has partnered up with Microsoft to deliver South Park episode, "Good Times With Weapons." Sure, it may not be an episode from the currently-running Season 10, it has still completely bypassed any HD channel to arrive exclusively on Xbox 360 (or so we think).
Xbox 360's New Library: HD South Park
I don't know if Comedy Central plans on following through by adding their entire library of South Park episodes to the Xbox 360 Marketplace, but MediaPost reports the groundbreaking move by Comedy Central.
To the best of my knowledge, this makes "SouthPark" the first network TV show to bypass its traditional distributors to offer a superior product via digital distribution -- in this case, a major video game platform.
If so, it's a huge development, and I've been surprised there hasn't been more buzz surrounding it. There's been talk for a while about whether TV is a dying medium, and while I would never suggest that the content of TV is going to die off, I do think that what "South Park" did was certainly one of the notes in the death knell for TV's current distribution method...
Since I am one of the many who enjoy the South Park reruns that appear on KCAL from 11PM to 12AM every weekday, I say bring on more South Park.
