The new show Pretty Little Liars has all the high school types: the good girl, the bad girl, the mean girl, etc. Ashley Benson is playing the mean girl type in the new show, based on the Sara Shepard books.

“I play Hanna Marin and she is the queen bee of the school,” Benson said. “When she was younger, she was the chubby girl who didn’t know how to dress and didn’t really know what to do with herself. She struggles with an eating disorder because she wants to be perfect. So she’s kind of insecure in a way and acts out to get attention and love. Then to everybody else she’s like this perfect girl so she’s fun to play.”
Benson prepared for the role of Hanna by reading all of Shepards books. “When I got the show, I went to the store and got all the books and you can’t put them down. They’re so fascinating. After each book, there’s a huge cliffhanger and you go straight into the other book because you want to know what happens. Every book is something completely different. You think you’ve figured out what happened but you have no idea and it twists.”
The books are for young adults, and it’s a more mature show for the ABC Family audience. “They’re promoting it really well. We look a little bit older in the billboards and the posters. They’re just really promoting it to reach out to teens. Since it’s already a book, we already have fans there so I think that’s going to really help. I mean, it’s our fan base, teens and even parents. I think that everybody will be able to relate to it in some way.”
Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesday nights on ABC Family.
