American Idol American Idol

Lack of Inspiration - This is Idol Gives Back week. Funds raised impact children around the world. And who better to fill shoes of mentor this week than Alicia Keys. Besides being a 12 time Grammy winner and selling 30 million records world-wide, she tirelessly supports the cause of HIV/AIDS children in Africa. In addition, Alicia Keys is Billboards’ top selling R&B artist of the decade. She knows something about the genre of Inspirational Songs.

It is sad most of what was displayed tonight was a lack of inspiration. The top 2 contestants have officially (and dare I say permanently) separated themselves from the pack. Let’s break it down from the best to the rest.

American Idol: Season 9 Top 7

Crystal Bowersox – “People Get Ready” by The Impressions – a cappella front, her best performance by far, such pent up emotion at the end she cried, first performance with no instrument, not an evening gown kind of girl – Randy said unbelievable, standing O – Ellen said never looked more beautiful, song beautiful – Kara said thank you for taking a risk, they call you “MamaSox” cause you just schooled all the contestants – Simon said that was inspirational, sang it fantastically, different class than everything else you heard tonight.

Lee DeWyze – “The Boxer” by Simon and Garfunkel – nice arrangement, good vocals, felt this song – Randy said one of your biggest fans, you are a great artist, gonna have a big career – Ellen said beautiful song choice, best performance by far – Kara said had your ‘moment’ tonight, keep picking things you feel connected to – Simon said sincere, emotional, like it was written last week, inspirational, brilliant.

Michael Lynche – “Hero” by Chad Kroeger – good effort, changed it up, there was that smirk at the end again – Randy said held your own, worked it out – Ellen said great job – Kara said wasn’t my favorite performance, don’t have the voice for it – Simon said sang it pretty well, felt artificial compared to last week, didn’t gel for me, isn’t the song about Spiderman (maybe Simon needs to look at the song list).

Casey James – “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac – another step backward from Beatles week, vocals not enough, killer guitar – Randy said good performance but see the same thing every week, give me something different – Ellen said great guitar playing, consistently good not great we need great now, no one will be talking about it tomorrow – Kara said not showing us what makes you different that you are not like everyone else, frustrated – Simon said amazed you chose that song (once again, it must have been on the list Simon), zero emotion, no originality, crazy song choice.

Siobhan Magnus – “When you Believe” by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston – nasal in parts, some moments of brilliance, the weirdness of the clothing choices too distracting – Randy said toughest song of the night, OK for me – Ellen said more confirmation of why you are here – Kara said technically well sung, too dramatic – Simon said not right song, old fashioned, all over the place, a shame.

Aaron Kelly – “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly – once again a big mature song, didn’t do anything to change it up, vocals ranged from rough to decent – Randy said giant song, strange arrangement, good job with huge song – Ellen said handled it good, you can fly – Kara said tough start, by the end got there – Simon said wasn’t very good, liked the end.

Tim Urban – “Better Days by The Goo Goo Dolls – too much song for him, real pitch problems, some painful moments, nothing like the last two weeks – Randy said for me song choice interesting, sounded ok, karaoke – Ellen said you are the soup of the day sometimes you like it sometimes you don’t (I am so tired of her attempts at humor, there isn’t time for it) today I didn’t like it – Kara said this is where you belong but not your best performance – Simon said if this was the first time we saw you we’d be impressed, have improved over the weeks but a little bit of a let down.

Well, who proved the least inspirational in the voting? Are you feeling it doesn’t matter as long as Crystal and Lee are safe? Or is there another contestant who should take the title? The two hour star-studded, fundraising spectacular Idol Gives Back with elimination results Wednesday night on Fox.
