At the end of the weekend we mentioned that one could expect an official announcement from Conan O'Brien on the Tonight Show situation come Monday. Well, that day has come and gone and, besides laughing it up while Conan tears NBC apart, there has been nothing official. Now the powers that be say we can hear something that's real come Thursday's show.
Conan O'Brien's Announcement Tomorrow (Thursday)
While people still think there is hope for Conan, I do believe that he is cashing his chips by doing a best-of collection of guests this week. NBC's already F'd him in a way, so good ridden. What I do believe is taking so long is the whole non-compete agreement, which should be short, and "Intellectual Property." According to Conan on Tuesday night's episode, NBC might not let him leave NBC with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and the Masturbating Bear in tow. The joke is that they consider that "intellectual."
We are also told that one of the holdups has to do with taxes. No joke. When you're taking a lump sum as big as Conan is getting, the government's due becomes very important.
While the Late Night drama sucks for Conan, it has led to interesting television. Every late night host seems to be attacking the other, leaving Conan in a protective bubble, with audiences unable to tell what's a joke and what's a real insult. I love it.
