Roman Polanski Roman Polanski
No surprise here. Europe, who has been giving Roman Polanski sanctuary over the past three decades, is rising up against the director's recent arrest. Just when we thought we couldn't further piss off other nations, we had to go and arrest a guilty rapist. Yes, I know, but this is a guilty rapist that already paid his dues, so I'm with Europe on this one.

Roman Polanski Gets Support

Acting as the voice of Europe, France has reached out to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for Polanski's immediate release from his Swiss jail. If you didn't know, France considers him to be one of their citizens, he was born there, and one worth protecting.

Backed by cries of outrage from politicians and film festival organizers in Switzerland, France, Germany and Poland, as well as high-profile supporters in Hollywood, Polanski was in a "fighting mood and determined to defend himself," his French lawyer, Herve Temime, said on Monday.

"We have begun by requesting his release," he said in a statement. "After that, his defense team will demonstrate the illegal nature of the extradition request he is facing. There is no legal reason based on the facts or the most basic principles of justice to keep Roman Polanski in prison for even a single day."

Well, if time spent for a single day causes outrage, just think about what Europe will do if Polanski spends the full sixty days behind bars while the U.S. tries to figure out how to get him back here. We're talking World War III people!!! Well, maybe not that far, but this will become another stain on the countries record of overreaching (for something not worth the time or money).

While the Swiss are feeling the heat, they continue to honor the international arrest warrant, put out in 2005, for Polanski.

"The Americans strongly believe that the arrest of Mr. Polanski is necessary -- that's for them to decide," Swiss economy minister Doris Leuthard told reporters in Paris.
