Netherland
After watching the novel get optioned last year, Focus Features and Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Prods. have begun to work together to create a feature adaptation of Joseph O'Neill's novel, Netherland.
Netherland Movie
Sam Mendes is thinking of directing the film off a script by Christopher Hampton. Based off the book, Netherland is set in New York City, where a lonely Dutch expatriate becomes drawn to the sport of cricket and forms an unlikely bond to immigrant culture. Besides earning O'Neill the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction this year, I can only assume that this book made it to Oprah's book club. I could be wrong, however.
Focus Features is already amped to have Hampton onboard, as this was the dude that successfully adapted Atonement for the studio, and Mendes should serve as thick icing on the cake.
