Glee is a full production number every week as the high school glee club performs a pop hit with a full ensemble. They have some theater professionals in their cast and utilize all their talents, like Jenna Ushkowitz as Tina Cohen-Chang.
Jenna Ushkowitz Shows Her Glee
“Coming from a theater background, I feel like we're doing summer stock theater every single week where you're performing the show at night and rehearsing during the day for the next show or episode,” Ushkowitz said. “So I feel like we're doing a musical and doing a TV show at the same time. It's this whole new experiment, and I think it's bonding us closer and making us work harder and learn faster because it's just so new and fresh.”
Tina is not supposed to be a fantastic singer, so Ushkowitz has to hold back. “You know, it's a role, and it's written that way. So I kind of find that in the character if it's going to further the story in any way, and that's who we are in the show. It's for the benefit of everything. I do feel like everybody gets to shine in their own way. So I don't feel like I'm being held back ever. I do feel like in further episodes that I get to sing and show actually what I can do.”
In her own high school, Ushkowitz was more than just a gleek. “I found I was a little bit of an over-achiever. I was president of the student council and president of My Select Choir, which was like our show choir. So I definitely did have the gleek.”
