Malcolm McDowell had no doubts he would be back for Halloween II. Even though he shot multiple endings for Dr. Loomis in Halloween, and the one used looked pretty dire, McDowell knew the score.
McDowell Returns for H2
“Well, of course,” he said. “I’ll be back for the third one. Who cares? It’s not real.”
He was so cavalier about the conventions of horror movie survival, he had no qualms about creating a totally different Loomis the second time around. “I wanted to bring a bit of comedy to it. I got bored playing the other Loomis so I just completely changed the character arbitrarily. I’d just gotten bored.”
Having written a book on Michael Myers and become famous, it doesn’t seem far off that celebrity would dictate these character changes. That wasn’t McDowell’s idea. “It was dictated more by his near death experience. I thought if somebody’s that close to death from this great big bulging guy, then I think you’d be pissed off. So I decided to play it that way, just for fun.”
Most of Loomis’s storyline in Halloween II takes place on the PR tour. “I had this wonderful actress, Mary [Birdsong] playing the PR. She was great so we were able to sort of improvise it and stuff like that which was great. I don't know whether a lot of the stuff made it into the film, probably not, but we had a lot of fun doing it.”
McDowell even had words for fans who might not like director Rob Zombie’s second vision of a Halloween film. “Well, what do you want to see, the same boring old Halloween again and again and again? Just put it on repeat and sit there watching the same damn movie.”
H2 opens to theaters on August 28th.
