Vampire Diaries Vampire Diaries
As a new brooding vampire lover on TV’s The Vampire Diaries, Paul Wesley faces inevitable comparisons to Twilight. He played it diplomatically when asked to compare his character, Stefan, to Edward Cullen.

Paul Wesley Writes in His Vampire Diaries

“You know, I don't know enough about Edward Cullen to be honest with you,” Wesley said. “So I don't know what his abilities are and his powers are. To be honest with you, I don't know. I think that’s a really sort of up to the viewer or reader to decide. Once they start seeing the show, they can kind of make their decision but I have no idea. I can’t even answer that.”

I took it upon myself to inform him that Edward is a pussy and he can take him. “Is he? Okay, all right, well, Stefan’s not a pussy.”

Also, Wesley will have a lot more time to develop his character. Cullen may have four books and four movies, but Vampire Diaries could run forever (and the book series has.)

“This is a weekly series too, so there's so much going on. There are so many new relationships. There's a lot going on in the show with vampires, but then there are personal relationships between all the characters. There are nonvampires everywhere.”

Wesley himself is in his mid-20s, but of course Stefan has a good century on him. “I think that was what was so appealing about this role. It's so challenging for me to do this because Nina and Kat and all the people on the show, we're all sort of the same age-ish. And we all are friends, and it's hard for me when I'm on set, I have to get into this place where I'm like, ‘Wait. I'm, like, their grandfather.’ But I'm pretending. It's really challenging, but fun and, I think, comes really kind of innately. I really enjoy this. I don't know why. It comes to me.”

Being a teenager doesn’t get any better with age though. “It's a rebirth. This is a rebirth. He's been alone, isolated. And this girl that he falls in love with, all of a sudden, it's like he can have that teenage experience and that young-adult experience, that college experience or whatever, the high school experience, the first love that he has been lacking for hundreds of years. It's not like he's putting on a facade and he's a conman. It's not like some pervy thing. He's genuinely experiencing all this with the naivete of an 18-year-old kid.”

The Vampire Diaries premieres September 10 on The CW.
