Vampire Diaries
Nina Dobrev stars as Elena on The Vampire Diaires, the latest in a series of young girls attracted to vampires. On this show it would be Team Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Team Damon (Ian Somerhalder) if that lexicon weren’t already taken.
Nina Dobrev Loves Vampires
“I love these boys, but they're like my brothers,” Dobrev said. “In terms of characters, Stefan is the man who tries to reach out to her soul, and he cares about her, and he takes care of her, whereas Damon has that bad-boy quality, and every girl likes a bad boy, at the end of the day. So it's a toss-up. They're both great guys, I'll tell you that though.”
Vampire Diaries is based on the L.J. Smith books, though Stephenie Meyer’s series is better known these days. Hence, comparisons to Twilight must be addressed.
“I watched it as well, but the thing is I read the books, the Twilight books way back. Well, really, it wasn't that long ago, but it was before the actual whole vampire/Twilight craze/ Rob Pattinson obsession with everyone in the world. So I was unaffected in that sense. I like them. I really like them. I mean, there's similarities. There's vampires in both shows but they're different, and as the series goes on, it's going to get different.”
The vampire fad is strong enough to support two shows and a movie franchise, Dobrev said. “There is something about a man who lurks in the dark, but it's not really a fad. It's timeless. Don't you guys agree? It's timeless. Vampires don't die. They're always around. They're eternal. And it just seems like right now, people are really responding, and they really like it.”
Dobrev is previously known from the Canadian DeGrassi series. She is the latest success from that talent pool.
“A lot of my cast mates and I have been doing a lot of great things, and it started out with DeGrassi. I came to L.A. for the first time in January of this past year. The Vampire Diaries was actually my first audition for a pilot. I read the script, and I loved it. I thought it was really cool and I'd just gotten off a series, so obviously I was trained and ready, and I knew the drill and everything to do with it. It just sort of worked out. The character was great, and I guess something happened, and they liked what I was doing.”
The Vampire Diaries premieres September 10 on The CW.
