Team Edward is going to have to tough it out during The Twilight Saga: New Moon. This is Jacob’s movie. He gets to step in and be the hunk when Edward Cullen goes off. As leading lady Bella, Kristen Stewart had to find a way to explain her fleeting interest in Jacob for one movie.

“Well, Bella and Edward’s relationship is so strange,” Stewart said. “I always say that she’s content after New Moon. It’s like New Moon is the struggle and then with Eclipse, the rest of her life is planned out and it’s not always such a big question as to what’s going to happen. They are going to stay together. It’s much more of a heightened depression than you think in this movie. You don’t just get sad, you feel like you’re going to die. It’s like the closest emotion to death there is. So we needed something really light to bring her out of that, and I don’t know how to describe how he did it, he just has it in him. I mean, Taylor has it in him to be Jacob.”

New Moon also has a new leader at the helm, with director Chris Weitz stepping in for Catherine Hardwicke. “Catherine was really spontaneous. It was like, whatever we had to go through, we had to really go through it. We didn’t have a whole lot of time about it. It was like whatever we felt, we would just go with it. Luckily, we had a lot more time. I really don’t think we had a lot more time, it’s just for this one, it was much more necessary to reconsider the things that we were saying and what it means for them because it’s not about discovering unabashed devotion. It’s about getting to know yourself and being okay with yourself and being okay with yourself being alone. It was just a lot different. It was just much calmer. Chris is the nicest person I’ve ever met. He’s just so compassionate and way too considerate and so concerned with how you’re feeling all the time. And the movie, it’s a heavy flick, where I have to go very low. It’s pretty dark. It’s not an easy story.”

Not like that Twilight which was all cake. “I mean, not that Twilight was but Twilight was about two people who were already sort of conflicted internally, throwing themselves against each other mindlessly. It was just very impulsive and in this case, we had to think a lot more about what we were doing because it wasn’t instinctual, like a chemistry love thing. It was like everything in our movie is heightened. If you get sad, you don’t just get sad. It’s like you’d rather just be dead. I guess people experience that in real life, but in our movie, it’s more than that. So, it was just harder.”

Stewart has played intensity before, but only in real world stories. “It’s hard though because you have no reference. I don’t know what it’s like to be shattered by somebody who physiologically completed you and just to have that taken away and what that feels like. I don’t know because it doesn’t exist. So, yeah, it’s hard.”

The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens to theaters on November 20th.
