The Proposal
Though Year One looked to have the momentum, it turned out that moviegoers have instead been craving a romantic comedy such as The Proposal. Starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, Proposal came in at number one during its opening bow.
Box Office Favors The Proposal
Universal was forced to split those looking for comedy with Warner Bros, whose The Hangover continues to do exceptionally well at the box office. Because of the split, The Proposal came out on top with $34.1 million at the box office thanks in part that it's one of the few romantic comedies expected to arrive during summer.
Slipping only 18% in its third weekend, The Hangover might have given up the #1 spot at the box office but was still able to earn an impressive $26.9 million to take the #2 spot.
Up, which is not only a great film but one that all families can enjoy, held strong at the #3 spot with $21.3 million. Thanks to the strong receipts, the Pixar animation is coming close to surpassing Paramount’s Star Trek as the most successful film of the year thus far at the domestic B.O. The sci-fi prequel has grossed $239.4 million through Sunday; against Up's $224.1 million.
Though Year One didn't make the top three during its opening bow, Universal says the film grossed what was expected. The historic comedy grossed an estimated $20.2 million at the box office.
