American Idol Season 8 Finale Performances
By J Rodgers | Image property of Fox
Ryan reported this would be the final performances of the show and this is American Idol. The finale was held at the Nokia Theater. Seacrest went on the say it was the acoustic rocker vs. the glam rocker, Conway vs. California, guy next door vs. guyliner, Kris vs. Adam. Kris won the coin toss last week and chose to perform second. Each contestant sang 3 songs – the contestants’ choice of a favorite of the season, Simon Fuller’s choice (creator of American Idol) – coronation song (co-written by Kara Dioguardi) that will become the newly crowned Idol’s first single. Take note of Ryan’s final words. The 2 hour results portion of the finale tomorrow night will run long, so set your DVR accordingly. How do they already know this?
Now for the performances.
American Idol: Finals
Round 1 Contestants’ Choice -
Adam Lambert – “Mad World” – wearing long black coat, lots of blue fog, beautiful and haunting, great choice, his best performance of the season – Randy said this is it, down to the wire, A+, A for Adam; Kara said so happy you chose that, incredible artist, rocked it again tonight; Paula said unbelievably proud you are on that stage, this is your moment, theatrical taste of what we’re going to see; Simon said maybe the coat over-theatrical, reminded me of Phantom of the Opera.
Kris Allen – “Ain’t No Sunshine” – on piano, soulful, better than when first performed it, one of his best performances – Randy said I can tell what kind of artist you will be, one of the best performances, better on this stage; Kara said creating intimate bond with audience, artists kill for that; Paula said awaken spirit in all of us, (then something about ‘Allenizing’ a song, then incoherent blah blah blah); Simon said this is a competition and when your name was announced last week I wasn’t for sure America made the right choice, but I take all that back after that performance, Simon gave Round 1 to Kris.
Round 2 Simon Fuller’s Choice –
Adam Lambert – “Change is Gonna Come” – in suit and tie, emotional, soulful, some screamy high parts, final notes killer – Randy said amazing R & B classic by Sam Cooke, you can sing your face off; Kara said may have been your best performance and interpretation; Paula said the best I’ve ever heard you sing – ever, you look like a superstar, you are going to be iconic; Simon said you are 100% back in the game.
Kris Allen – “What’s Going On” – on guitar, good vocal, very nice interpretation, not as ‘showy’ of a song as Fuller’s choice for Adam – Randy said a real live duel, a little light for this big room; Kara said you’ve been true to yourself, I like the social consciousness of the song; Paula said what’s going on? You tore that song up and made Marvin Gaye proud; Simon said like three friends in their room, did not grab hold of the song and make it your own, too laid back for tonight
Round 3 Coronation Song –
Adam Lambert – “No Boundaries” – song did not suit him, uncomfortable moments, just ok – Randy said dude you can sing the phone book (which would sound better than this atrocity co-written by Kara), pitchy in spots, just ahright for me; Kara said amazing when someone with your level of talent sings our song, proud; Paula said I’m in awe, I will be a fan forever; Simon said over the season one of the most original contestants we have ever had, think we’ve found a world-wide star with you.
Kris Allen – “No Boundaries” – better stripped down without the background singers, showed some nerves and strain – Randy said you should be proud, amazing competitor , song fit you better than Adam, but too high for you; Kara said compelling artist, hope people vote based on the season (what does that mean exactly?), key too high; Paula said take it in, most compelling finale, wish you luck (this sounds like a “sorry you didn’t win statement”); Simon said watching you tonight incredible, you deserve to be on this stage tonight.
Based on tonight’s performances, I give the edge to Kris. If voters take the whole season into account, as suggested by the judges, Adam may take it. This one is just too close to call.
Our own Idol darling, Carrie Underwood, closed out the show with “Home Sweet Home” accompanied by clips of Season 8.
Well, Idol fans, did you vote your thumbs off? Will America be happy with the results? Tomorrow night’s results show is promised to be jam packed - performances by David Cook, Black Eyed Peas, Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana and more. American Idol Finale Results Wednesday night on Fox.
