I will title this week’s results show – Matt sent (Rat) Packin’.
Ryan reported there were over 47 million votes cast – the highest number this season. He then asked Simon what he thought about last night’s show. Simon said after watching it back, everyone was good. It was the best show at this level of the competition.
Next up was the Ford music video. Our idols were running in the desert set to the song “Energy”.
American Idol: Top 5 Results
The group medley followed. In keeping with the Rat Pack/Big Band theme our contestants sang “It Don’t Mean a Thing” and “I Got Rhythm”. I have to say they were all good.
Now in a major waste of air time, to celebrate Danny and Allison’s birthdays, our idols were baking cakes in the mansion. A huge food fight ensued. What a mess.
Ryan spoke the infamous words, “Dim the Lights” and had all the contestants join him center stage. Matt Giraud to the right side of the stage; Danny Gokey to the left side of the stage; Allison Iraheta to the left side of the stage next to Danny; Kris Allen to the right side of the stage next to Matt; Adam is asked to join the group he feels he belongs in – Adam chose to join Danny and Allison; Ryan pulled him to the other side of the stage to join Matt and Kris in the Bottom 3 (shocking twist here); so the first two members of the Final Four would be Allison and Danny.
While the Bottom 3 was sweating it out back stage, Natalie Cole performed “Something’s Got to Give”. I have concern about how thin she looked. Her voice is just not what it used to be. I am not sure why Idol is booking performers who no longer possess their “A Game”.
The AI Season 5 winner, Taylor Hicks sang “7 Mile Breakdown” from his album “The Distance”. It was fun to see the Soul Patrol return to the Idol stage. He played both guitar and harmonica. Hicks has lost some weight and was sporting a Clooney haircut – looking good Taylor.
Ryan brought Matt, Adam and Kris on stage. Kris was granted safety.
This week’s mentor, Jamie Foxx, energized the crowd with his #1 hit “Blame It” from his “Intuition” album. Foxx proclaimed the Top 5 are 5 of the most talented people he has seen in the last 10 years. They are true artists. Then he tossed in a shameless plug for his current movie The Soloist.
Once more, Ryan said “Dim the lights” – Adam was safe.
Roll package of Matt’s Idol journey; followed by a reprise of “My Funny Valentine”, after which Matt referred to himself as a “cat with 9 lives” (please see American Idol Season 8 Top 7 #2 Results). We have our Final Four, Allison, Danny, Kris and Adam and next week they will sing Rock and Roll. Which Idol will excel in this genre? Who was surprised by Adam’s spot in the Bottom 2? Are there more surprises to come? American Idol performances Tuesday/ results Wednesday on Fox.
