I will title this results show “Disco Double Down”.
Since the “Judge’s Save” was invoked last week, there were two Idol contestants going home. The highest number of votes this season thus far were cast – over 45 million.
In honor of the disco theme the group number was “Shake Your Body Down to the Ground”. Choreography was provided by our own Paula Abdul. The Idols did a nice job with the dancing, but the singing was once again lip-synched – so disappointing. After the performance, Miss Paula was presented with a huge hydrangea bouquet – just like a dance recital. I have to admit Paula can still do her thing.
The Ford music video, “I’m Good, I’m Gone”, had our idols in different professions followed by them showing up at an open mic night.
American Idol: Top 7 Results
Now it was time for some results – “Dim the lights” – Ryan had Lil Rounds stand up, she was the first contestant on the bottom row of the sofa. Ryan brought Lil to the far side of the stage where he abruptly reported her Idol journey was over. Her reprise of “I’m Every Woman”, although far from perfect, was much better than Tuesday night.
We were “treated” to a disco medley by some of the superstars of the era. I don’t think anyone loves disco more than I, but some things are better left remembered the way they were. Freda Payne’s performance of “Band of Gold” was more than ‘painful’. We won’t foray into what is too much plastic surgery and what a boon to the world Spanx has been, but I digress. Thelma Houston belted “Don’t Leave Me this Way”, and included Simon in the lyrics. To ‘round out’ (and I do mean round) the disco trio Wayne Kasey (KC of KC and the Sunshine Band fame) strained “Get Down Tonight”.
Back to the results – “Dim the lights” – Kris Allen – safe; Adam Lambert – safe; Ryan had Danny Gokey stand and tried to add some suspense by talking to him about bloggers saying Simon was cruel and what did he think he meant by ‘clumsy’. Simon ended it all and told Ryan “Stop being facetious and get back to the contestants”. Danny-safe; Anoop Desai – in the Bottom 3; Allison Iraheta and Matt Giraud stood – Matt was safe – he is truly the cat with nine lives; Allison joined Anoop on the stools of shame.
AI Season 7 runner-up, David Archuleta, sang “Touch My Hand”. The girls in the pit loved it. I have to say I still don’t get it. There were some real pitch issues. Then, in another awkward Idol moment, Ryan asked David to offer some words of wisdom to Allison and Anoop.
Finally the verdict – Anoop would be the second cast-off of the night. Anoop was very classy and said he was ‘disappointed’. And like Lil, was much more comfortable with his exit performance of “Dim all the Lights” (a prophetic choice?). Lil then joined Anoop on stage and their time on Idol packages were shown together.
Well, Idol fans, we are down to the Fab 5. Were you happy with the subsequent outcome of the Judge’s Save? How long will the sole girl survive? The road is tough from here. American Idol performances Tuesday/ results Wednesday nights on Fox.
