Silence of the Lambs
I was a Sophomore in high school when The Silence of the Lambs won the Oscar. Back then I was happy to watch a VHS tape recorded in SLP mode off HBO. The Blu Ray might somewhat simulate that experience in hi-def. Obviously it’s not that bad, but it has a softness that we all accepted back then. So maybe it’s like a VHS in standard mode, up-res’d to look the same on a 56” TV as it would have on a 19”.
On Blu-Ray: Silence of the Lambs
I’m starting to think it might be something with the Orion masters. Compared to Robocop, this is a top notch transfer. Similar to The Terminator, it kind of looks like the up-res’d DVD, but not a new HD transfer. Maybe Fox can’t improve on the Orion properties, or maybe they just don’t care. It’s gotta be the former. They must want to make the most money possible off their Oscar winning catalog.
So you won’t see much gritty detail in the cells, or much color in the Midwest foliage. There’s some bright color in the museum makeshift cell and the dark scenes hold up nicely. Nothing like a beloved classic should look though.
