Ryan said with over 31 million votes we were in for a night of surprises.

Results night opened with Ryan saying over 31 million votes were received. A recap of Tuesday night’s performances followed.

The contestants jumped into their performance of Travis Tritt’s “Trouble”. Scott was on piano, while the rest of the idols sang the miserably lip synced and poorly choreographed number. This part of the show really needs more work.

The Ford music video followed. Tonight the idols tossed water balloons while singing Ok Go’s “Here It Goes Again”. It looked like they had some fun with it.

There were behind the scenes clips from the elimination show after-dinner from last week. It showed the idols and some family members dining at Buca di Beppo. It is a family style restaurant and you can get private rooms. But come on producers, on the money Idol brings in; couldn’t we go to a more up-scale LA restaurant? Now Ryan said dim the lights.

Danny Gokey – safe; Lil Rounds – safe; Anoop – safe; Allison Iraheta and Michael Sarver both sent to the stools of shame.

Brad Paisley performed his new country hit “Then”. He told Ryan, Carrie Underwood has been the greatest addition to country music in the past ten years.

Back to the elimination.

Scott MacIntyre – safe; Megan Joy Corkrey – safe; (wait a minute, there are only four of the favorites left – one of them will be going into the bottom 3); Matt Giraud – safe; Kris Allen – safe; (Alexis Grace and Adam Lambert are the two left standing – this is definitely part of the surprise Ryan referred to earlier); Alexis is sent to the stools of shame.

Ryan called out the bottom three to give one their reprieve. The contestant sent back to the sofa of safety was Allison Iraheta.

Carrie Underwood’s introduction package told us she has had 9 #1 singles and 40 top music industry awards. She was the latest female inductee into The Grand Ole Opry. Carrie and Randy Travis performed a duet of “I Told You So”. She just gets better and better. The purity of her voice – wow.

Here we go – Michael is safe and Alexis must sing to earn the “judges’ save”. The poor girl had many off notes in the performance. After the judges deliberated, Simon said it was good but not good enough. Alexis would be leaving Idol. Roll video of Alexis’ time on AI.

Are we surprised at Alexis’ early exit? Should the judges have used their save? Are you happy with the selection of the Touring Top 10? Which of the Idols will benefit most from next week’s theme of Motown with input from Barry Gordy and mentor Smokey Robinson? Look for Ai on special nights next week – Performances Wednesday – Results Thursday on Fox.
