Pushing Daisies - The Complete First Season
The extra features on Pushing Daisies’ first season DVD had to be as whimsical as the show itself. The behind the scenes featurette menu lets you select different pies for each episode, and different pies within those pies for different varieties of extras. There’s no Play All option which is a pain and you have to guess to find what you want, but it’s Pushing Daisies!
On DVD: Pushing Daisies
You may find some mini-commentary, some interviews discussing the filmmaking, characters or themes of episodes. Sometimes they mention alternate ideas that got scrapped or studio notes they fought. That’s kind of more revealing than going in depth. Just here’s what we didn’t do, and that tells you the whole process in a nutshell.
A cool little one shows just how they make it so colorful, with technical demonstrations of what the scenes could look like (that’s the first pie in the “Fun in Funeral” menu). Others reveal very real devices that create some of the surreal imagery, like Olive Snook’s carpet matching her upholstery. You’ll see some B-roll on blue screens. Little tidbits like that show you how they make the show, without going into boring detail of the process, which we see on every other DVD anyway.
All of these segments are short so it kind of offsets the need to manually search through them. At least you can bang ‘em out quickly. Also, the submenus have arrows that scroll through all the episodes, so you don’t have to deal with too much menu navigation.
