Hellboy II: The Golden Army
It looks like Guillermo del Toro has really picked up his A game when it comes to the Hellboy sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. With a slightly higher budget and a massively increased popularity among the masses, it looks like Del Toro's endless imagination was allowed to run pleasantly rampant for HB's second outing.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army Reviews
Two new official reviews have surfaced for Hellboy II and, as hoped, both are convinced that the film will do just swell at the box office.
Variety
Curmudgeonly, cantankerous, cigar-chomping Hellboy is a cross between a '40s noir detective and a burning fireplace, but he's also cool enough to make "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" the hipster's hit of the summer. Yes, Catholic imagery has always run rampant through helmer Guillermo del Toro's movies, including "Pan's Labyrinth," which he made in between the two "Hellboy" entries, but he's really an evangelist of fanboy excess: Given the right push by Universal, he'll be making fantasy-horror acolytes out of the heretofore unconverted.
THR
Playing it faster and looser, if somewhat less focused than the first "Hellboy," the Los Angeles Film Festival's official closer (neatly book-ending with curtain-raiser "Wanted") should have no problem building on the $100 million-plus its predecessor grossed internationally when it officially enters the summer derby on July 11.
With writer-director del Toro given free license to go where his singular vision takes him, "Hellboy II" plays like Guillermo's Greatest Hits with even hotter visual effects -- Liz's engulfing flames have come a long way in four years -- and a winking nod to "The Wizard of Oz" tossed into the crazy mix for good measure.
