The Cruelest Miles The Cruelest Miles
It looks like Walden Media is looking for a break from fantastical storytelling. The banner is sticking closer to Narnia producer Mark Johnson, however, in order to adapt the novel The Cruelest Miles: The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic.

The Cruelest Miles Coming to Film

The Cruelest Miles tells the true story of a team of men and sled dogs that braved temperatures of 60 below to save an Alaskan town from a deadly epidemic in 1925.

Walden Media acquired the rights to the material after a bidding war with other interested studios.

In The Cruelest Miles we learn how a team of 20 men and more than 200 sled dogs undertook a 674-mile race against time to deliver a vaccine to combat an incipient epidemic of diphtheria afflicting a Gold Rush town deep in Alaska.

For those of you who have never heard of the disease, one of its symptoms involves a swollen neck. While humorous at first, the condition leads to degenerating motor control and loss of sensation.

Walden and Johnson might as well stick close, as they are also prepping the third Narnia installment, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which is set to begin production this January.
