Shock and awe! Wednesday night held probably the most controversial results in Idol history. Normally I have the first word on AI results, but I see my editor beat me to the punch. Since I know he really doesn’t care about Idol, the results obviously struck a chord. The Idol faithful are up in arms. Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s do our usual recap of the evening.

American Idol: Top 12 Elimination Round

Whoville is watching Ryan Seacrest open the show. Then the talented Jim Carrey is shown sitting in the audience in Horton Hears a Who gear, to promote the Fox film.

Ryan tells us the Lennon and McCartney songbook was such a hit it will also be the theme next week.

The obligatory Beatles medley follows. The bad singing outweighed the good. Our contestants are so much better than this.

Ryan says the contestants had “A Hard Days’ Night” on Tuesday with their performances.

Ryan has the contestants stand up in groups of 4. The first group Carly, Michael, Jason, and Syesha – Syesha was placed in the bottom three and performed “Got to Get You into My Life”. The next group consisted of Chikezie, Amanda, Kristy Lee and David Cook – Kristy Lee added to the bottom three. As if it wasn’t bad enough the first time, we got to hear “8 Days a Week” again.

Next, Ryan took phone calls from the Idol audience. This was not interesting, seemed staged and added nothing to the show.

Katherine McPhee returned to the Idol stage. She performed George Harrison’s “Something” accompanied on piano by the great David Foster. Katherine is such a beauty with a sweet voice.

Left in the final group is David Archuleta, Brooke, David Hernandez and Ramiele – David Hernandez was awarded the final spot in the bottom three. He reprised his version of “I Saw her Standing There”.

Syesha was the first to be given a reprieve and return to her seat. (So, we are all thinking Kristy Lee is going home right, right? David had an off night, but the guy really has a great voice.) But, David Hernandez was shown the door. I was afraid this would happen (see American Idol Top 12). He will not make it to the Top 10 and subsequently not participate in the Idol tour.

What other twists and turns can we expect? Stay tuned for performances on Tuesday – results on Wednesday on Fox.
