Back in February I alerted our readers that CanMag.Com was expecting to go through a few changes in the next couple of months. After adding the Sub-Department listings we have finally finished the first draft of the CanMag Forums (announcement coming this week).
Now that the forums are 'complete,' the only thing left was to work on that annoying pop-in ad we have and integrate the CanMag forums into the entire site. I was originally planning to wait on this task until the slow months of summer, but anxiousness got the best of me and I am about halfway done with the full upgrade of CanMag.Com from version 4.2 to 5.0.
So how does the new version affect our readers?
CanMag.Com- Version 5.0
Below are a few good reasons on why I and the rest of the CanMag crew are excited about the upcoming changes to CanMag.Com.
New Layout and Design
Changing the design of a website is like the first day of having a new car. Everything looks different and, in most cases, everything looks better. We began to use the look of version 4.0 only a few months after the creation of CanMag back in September of 2004 and have used it ever since; we have been due a change.
Though the layout won't be as colorful, it should allow our readers to navigate the site much, much, easier.
Now that we have finished installing our CanMag Forums we figured it would be necessary to integrate the current discussions into the entire site. As of right now I have integrated the last ten discussions onto every page of CanMag in order to keep our readers up to date.
I may later expand the forums even more to allow user access and controls directly from the home page.
That Damn Pesky Ad!
It is no mystery that our pop-in ad can get a bit annoying. We hate it too, but it is currently the only thing that keeps us running. However, if now isn't the time to take a risk I don't know what is. The pop-in advertisement will have its consistency lowered to once per visit per four hours. After opening any article once on CanMag.Com you will not see the pop-in ad again until your next visit four-plus hours later. The ad was originally set at two times per visit and an interval of one hour.
As our traffic continues to grow we will continue to lower the consistency of the pop-in ad. The next update on the ad will lift the consistency from four to twelve hours.
There are a bunch of other little details that you will find different but it will take some time to catch them all.
The only thing that sucks is that some of the older articles may have an awkward look due to the changes in layout; crap!
