Fans know that Clerks II was originally called The Passion of the Clerks. After the heat he took for Dogma, that little inside joke seemed like a minor dig at best. But Smith decided to go with the more traditional Clerks II, though there are religious references in the film.
Religion in Clerks II
“There’s no great irony that the characters are age 33,” joked Smith. “But at the same time, it’s not like Dogma time where you're really kind of facing down the religious right. I think unless you’re really dialed into any sort of Christian spirituality, you probably wouldn’t even pick up on the religious references in the movie.”
Rosario Dawson suggested that when they were shooting under the original title, there was even more religion in the film. “There were a lot of times where Kevin was going for a record amount of times you could say Jesus,” she said. “Sometimes a sentence, but definitely in the movie. And sometimes he’d do a scene and be like, ‘OK, do it faster and you say Jesus before that line, you say Jesus after that line and if you can say Jesus in the middle of your line that would be great. And if you want to put a couple of curses in there, go. Action!’ It was pretty funny. It was a very relaxed setting I must say.”
Smith said the title change did not affect the religious content. For example, the new and improved Jay and Silent Bob are in a 12 step program, clean and sober. Their interpretations of the bible are not as prevalent as they were in the original script. “There was a storyline going through about Jay and Bob, how they would turn to the bible any time they needed to make a decision, because that’s what a lot of 12 steppers do. But that was a storyline that didn’t get cut by virtue of the title change, it just got cut because it was like we tried it, we shot two portions of it and I was just like, ‘Ah, it’s just not working for me that much.’ So I just kind of dropped the other portions from when we were shooting and just kind of kept things a little tighter. But it wasn’t like I’m going to trim out the religious stuff because we’re no longer The Passion of the Clerks.”
Clerks II will hit theatres on July 21st.
