A Scanner Darkly A Scanner Darkly- Winona Ryder
It’s been several years since we saw Winona Ryder on the screen as Adam Sandler’s love interest in Mr. Deeds. Actually, it will be another few months before we see the real Ryder on screen again. In A Scanner Darkly, animators have drawn over her actual image to create her animated likeness. From an acting standpoint, Ryder never performed differently.

Scanner Darkly Interview- Winona Ryder

“I didn’t even think of it because in Waking Life, which is one of my five top favorite movies of all time, I felt like the performances came through so much, the subtletym so I knew this was going to be that times a thousand,” she said. “If I thought about it, it would have probably been distracting.”

Ryder plays the woman in Keanu Reeves’ life for the second time. He’s an undercover cop infiltrating the world of a superdrug of the future. With multiple identities and extreme paranoia, the Matrix veteran was an asset to Ryder..

“The material is still very challenging. I feel like if we were making this movie forever, I don’t know if we’d ever be able to fully grasp it. It’s endless. I was really scared and he was there. He makes me feel really safe and was there for me.”

Based on Philip K. Dick’s novel, A Scanner Darkly has a long history with Ryder’s family. “My godfather [Timothy Leary] was actually roommates with him briefly. When I was really little apparently I met a lot of really interesting, great people. I wish I could remember because it would be great, but at the time they were grown-ups to me. He was always sort of part of the circle of the crowd that my dad and mom are in. But I think I read him really early on and I never thought there would be an adaptation of A Scanner Darkly, but I always hoped that maybe I would get a chance to be in it.”

Set in the not so distant future where undercover cops actually have technology to hide their identity at the office, Ryder found the story particularly meaningful while filming. “It was really weird at the time watching the news because there are things happening like Halliburton, all of that. To me it’s really eerie how relevant it is politically and socially. I’m really happy to be a part of a movie like that, aside from just loving the movie as a personal story. I thought Philip K. Dick was really, really on the money when he wrote it. It’s amazing what he predicted. And to me, I just think it’s a terrifying time right now in this country and in the world.”

A Scanner Darkly opened to theatres this weekend.
