For the tentpole films of 2006 it has been the international box office that has brought home the real bacon. However, this resource has begun to dwindle thanks to none other than the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
World Cup Hurts Tentpole Films
According to Variety, films such as The Da Vinci Code are noticing large decreases in earnings thanks to the arrival of soccer's biggest summer. Code dropped a whopping 57% from last weekend.
Sony is not alone, however, with the overall decline in films overseas being placed somewhere near 60%.
20th Century Fox's X-Men: The Last Stand was no match for the sport and fell 62% from last week with a take of $12.8 million.
Though there are still many in the states who don't want to admit it, soccer is the world's most popular sport. We got 80 million to watch the Super Bowl while the World Cup will have billions of viewers; and that is something hard to compete with.
I am currently watching USA lose to CZU with a score of zero to two. Hopefully they can bring it back in the second half.
