Firewall HD DVD Review

Firewall Firewall
Firewall is officially the most recent movie available in HD DVD. Warner Brothers’ newest release comes in a dual format with HD DVD on one side and standard DVD on the other. This time, I started with the plain DVD to see what a boost we’d get when we flip.

Firewall HD DVD Review

Firewall makes a perfectly fine HDMI conversion on my 52” JVC HD TV. The WB logo glows sharply and the green credits text makes you feel like you’ve stepped into an old Apple II. Most things look sharp, especially the heavy rain scenes with all the droplets. Faces and be a little fuzzy but close-ups flatter the likes of Virginia Madsen and Harrison Ford.

Flip it over for the real HD DVD and it’s not all that much different. The studio logo may be a tad shinier, and all the scenes may be slightly brighter. Madsen glows a little more and Ford’s face is shown in a little more glory, but it certainly doesn’t make the case for upgrading all your hardware.

Either version of Firewall is fine. But the fact that this action movie has a less noticeable difference than Rumor Has It is troubling.

Stay tuned for updates.
