Date Movie Date Movie
I don’t usually listen to audio commentaries anymore. They’re usually all the same, and because I’ve already interviewed the filmmakers, there’s nothing new. But Date Movie features an anti-commentary by two film critics, and since one of them is Bob Strauss, I had to hear it.

Date Movie DVD Review

Bob Strauss is a friend of mine. He writes for the Los Angeles Daily News and he is the quintessential curmudgeon-y movie critic with a deep, pointed, sarcastic voice. But it’s not about being snarky just to be clever. He bears the burden of seeing what’s what and feeling like you’re the only one who notices, which is why I consider us kindred spirits despite our different tastes. He laments the state of current movies yet you can tell somewhere in there, he just longs for a movie to satisfy his cravings.

That’s why I was surprised that he was the guy who liked Date Movie. The other guy hated it. And for an anti-commentary, they sure are intellectual. They’re not so vicious about even the most negative things. They analyze the problems with modern spoof movies and they’re right.

They use big words like erudite. When was the last time you heard someone say erudite, let alone in an audio commentary? They explain the humor of the bum fighting scene although they didn’t seem to know Bum Fights, which is what I assume the bum fighting date montage is spoofing. Or maybe I’m giving the film too much credit.

Where Strauss truly shines is in his long, rambling build-up to his points. He can’t mention the names of the movies Date Movie spoofs for legal reasons and you just feel his frustration at the lame rom-com genre. He so wants to call them out but he’s playing by the rules. You’re going inside the mind of a critic who’s seen years of this stuff.

The two critics respect each other even though they disagree, so you really get to enjoy the crossfire analysis without devolving into insults. But mainly, they go to all this trouble for a movie like Date Movie, which is the greatest joke of the whole disc.

All the while you can catch the select good laughs in Date Movie. As for any unrated content, I sure couldn’t tell.

Stay tuned for updates.
