Blazing Saddles Blazing Saddles
This is the real test of HD DVD. Will old movies look any better with this newfangled technology than they do on normal DVD? If 30-year-old Blazing Saddles is the test, the answer is yes.

Blazing Saddles HD-DVD Review

Wow. I have never seen this film look so clean and spotless. It is sharp and there are no blemishes. The occasional dirt spec may sneak in but that’s just nit picking.
You may notice film grain if you put your face right up to the TV, but any normal viewing distance is clean.

The clear pristine landscapes fill a widescreen TV like my JVC HDTV with detailed vistas. The dust of the western muddies some of the color but it’s still a sharp brown. Even the suede sheriff’s costume looks smooth enough to run your fingers over. Close-ups on doors reveal all the knots and grains. This is the sort of thing you start to appreciate when you’re watching a fart joke comedy in HD.

More color and contrast is visible in the town where the blue sky hovers over the colorful village. The bright red stage of the saloon and the pristine white of the Hollwood musical stage. Night time scenes are sharp and defined with shadow.

And remember, my JVC TV is only 720p. All this detail is evident for me. Imagine what you highfalutin 1080p owners will get.

Stay tuned for updates.
