Let's face it, films with a hot lead character creates easy interest into any project. DOA: Dead or Alive will depend on the moviegoers interest in its female cast and it looks like other studios are beginning to take notice. Though heroine films have not been the biggest hit at the box office of late -- take Aeon Flux for example -- what about the resurrection of Red Sonja?
That's right, the humorously entertaining film from the 80s is ready to make a return to the bigscreen.
Millennium Gets Red Sonja
According to Variety, Red Sonja is in the midst of a comeback. Last year, Dynamite Entertainment launched a new Red Sonja series that has gone on to be one of the bestselling indie comicbooks on the market.
Because of the character's renewed popularity, Millennium Films is ready to spend north of $25 million to bring Red Sonja back to the bigscreen. But can Conan come to this time?
Though many didn't notice the discrepancy in the original film, Arnold Schwarzenegger's character was named Kalidor, not Conan. Red Sonja was introduced into Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" comics in 1973. Arnold, who still looked like Conan in the film, had to go by Kalidor due to rights issues.
"The first movie was not a good one -- all the more reason to remake it. It is a great character and a great brand," said Joe Gatta, head of Millennium Films.
Considering that fantasy films are the hottest thing right now and a hot lead girl couldn't hurt, Red Sonja might have a solid chance on its return to theatres.
Just don't make the same mistake that Paramount Pictures did on Aeon Flux; the skimpier the outfit the better.
