The folks at NBC’s new comedy 30 Rock have already poked fun at NBC’s drama Studio 60 from the Sunset Strip in their TV spots. Both shows deal with the backstage goings on at a sketch comedy show. 60 is a one hour drama while 30 is a half hour comedy.

Tina Fey Talks 30 Rock

For this one last story beating to death the similarities between two shows on the same network, 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey addressed the competition. “I think in tone they’re really different but yes, old people are going to be confused,” she joked. “Grandma is going to be confused. Look for Alec Baldwin. If you can find Alec Baldwin, you know you have us.”

Fey hasn’t kept tabs on Studio 60, focusing all her time on making 30 Rock a hit on Wednesdays. “Yes, the big concern to me that our show is so similar to nip/tuck,” she continued to mock. “No, the great thing about doing the show is we’re so busy, we’re shooting five days a week, writing seven days a week sort of that there is no time to even worry about it. We’re barreling ahead.”

When NBC first announced they were producing two shows on the subject of late night sketch comedy writers, they immediately assured the respective teams that both were a go. “It’s funny because I had friends coming up to me saying, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry you’re not going to get to do your show.’ I said, ‘Well, I hadn’t really heard anything’ and then really actually within the same day, Kevin Riley called me at home to assure me that we were still [on]. Because we were in preproduction for the pilot and he assured me that we were still going to shoot the pilot and that he believed in both shows, so I took him at his word. So far so good.”

That’s pretty gracious. Most people would have used profanity. “I swear so much all the time it wouldn’t have even interrupted my constant flow of swearing that was probably happening over the quality of my lunch.”

Behind the scenes, the talent performing in each show are already friends. “Matthew Perry hosted our show at SNL. Amanda Peet had come and hung out. I think she was maybe friends with Jimmy Fallon so I had met a bunch of them before.”

So far she’s only seen one episode of Studio 60 but Fey gives her support. “It looks very fancy. I think Bradley Whitford is cute.”

30 Rock airs Wednesday nights on NBC.

Stay tuned for updates.
